Schuler Plumbing is proud to be serving the good people of Alexandria, Minnesota. We thought you might like to know a bit more about this interesting and vibrant community.

History

The community of Alexandria was founded in 1858, the same year that Minnesota became a state in the union.  Alexander and William Kinkhead originally from Delaware were brothers traveling along the Red River Trail. They stopped to establish a small community on the shores of Lake Agnes. Alexander served as the community’s first postmaster. The town of Alexander was named in honor of him.

By 1859 a state road was established that passed through the area, establishing new opportunities for future settlement.  The JC Burbank Stage line also came through and when the US Civil War broke out in 1861, the town saw a good stream of new residents. When the Sioux uprising began in 1862, everything was abandoned as the settlers went east to safety. When the uprising was eventually quelled and the United States Army established a stockade at the town site, many of the settlers came back.  Alexandria was a government post until the signing of treaties with the Sioux led to the withdrawal of troops in the spring of 1866.
